Best Korean Restaurants in Seoul: Where Reddit's Advice Holds Up

Best Korean Restaurants in Seoul: Where Reddit's Advice Holds Up

Crowdsourced restaurant threads are reliable for cheap, casual and late-night eating in Seoul, and unreliable for anything that needs a booking. Cross-check them against two published lists: the MICHELIN Guide Seoul & Busan 2026, which selected 178 Seoul restaurants, and Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2026, which placed 13 Seoul kitchens inside its top 100.

The short version

  • Seoul holds 42 MICHELIN Stars in the 2026 edition: one Three-Star, ten Two-Star, 31 One-Star.
  • 51 Seoul restaurants carry a Bib Gourmand, the MICHELIN designation for a full meal under 45,000 won per person.
  • Korea Consumer Agency Seoul averages, mid-2026: gimbap 3,800 won a roll, a kimchi-jjigae set meal 8,654 won, naengmyeon 12,615 won, samgyetang 18,154 won.
  • Five days of eating on those averages, with one Bib Gourmand dinner added, works out at 157,730 won per person, about US$112.
  • Gwangjang Market's main hall is closed Sundays; its Food Alley runs 09:00 to 23:00 all year.

Why the same Seoul restaurant names keep resurfacing on Reddit

Upvote ranking is a popularity mechanism, not a freshness mechanism. A comment written two years ago keeps its score after the restaurant has moved, changed chefs, or shut, because votes never expire and nobody revisits an archived thread to correct it. That single property explains most of the bad recommendations travellers arrive with.

The second bias is linguistic. Places that surface repeatedly in English-language threads tend to have an English menu, walk-in capacity, and an address inside the Line 2 loop. Those are real conveniences, and they are also the exact filters that push out the neighbourhood restaurant three subway stops further out that a Korean diner would name first.

What the crowd is genuinely good at: queue behaviour, what time a place actually fills, whether a stall takes cards, whether a two-portion minimum applies, and which dish on a long menu is the one worth ordering. That is lived operational detail, and no guide publishes it. The Korea-focused subreddits are worth reading for that layer and worth ignoring for rankings.

This page does not quote or reproduce any thread. It takes the categories of advice that recur in crowdsourced Seoul restaurant discussions and checks them against sources that publish their criteria: the MICHELIN Guide, Asia's 50 Best, and Korea's official consumer price tracking.

The 2026 award lists: 42 stars, 51 Bib Gourmands, 13 entries in Asia's top 100

The MICHELIN Guide Seoul & Busan 2026 was announced at a ceremony on 5 March 2026 at SIGNIEL Busan, the Guide's tenth year in Korea since its 2017 debut. MICHELIN's own summary of the 2026 selection puts the total at 233 restaurants, 178 of them in Seoul and 55 in Busan, with ten new or promoted starred establishments, a record for Korea.

Mingles, under chef Kang Min-goo, remains the only Three-Star restaurant in Korea, retained for a second consecutive year. Mosu returned to the guide at Two Stars in 2026 after holding Three Stars in 2023 and 2024 and being absent from the 2025 edition during a temporary closure. Sosuheon joined it as a new Two-Star. The Green Star, awarded for sustainable practice, now sits with four Korean restaurants: Gigas and Mitou in Seoul, Fiotto in Busan, and the Bib Gourmand Gosari Express in Seoul.

The Bib Gourmand tier is the more useful one for most visitors, because it comes with a published price ceiling: a complete meal under 45,000 won per person. Eight new Bib Gourmands were announced on 27 February 2026, five of them in Seoul: 3rd Samgyetang, Gosari Express, Sobakeeri Suzu, Andeok and Oilje.

The second list is peer-voted rather than inspector-led. Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2026 was announced on 25 March 2026 in Hong Kong, with The Chairman taking the top spot. Seoul placed six restaurants in the top 50, behind Bangkok's 14 and ten each for Tokyo and Hong Kong. Seven more Seoul restaurants appear on the extended 51 to 100 list published alongside it.

This table answers one question: which Seoul kitchens the region's chefs and critics actually voted for in 2026.

Restaurant Rank List band
Mingles 4 Top 50
Onjium 14 Top 50
Eatanic Garden 26 Top 50
Mosu 41 Top 50
Bium 43 Top 50
7th Door 49 Top 50
San 54 51-100
Solbam 55 51-100
Born and Bred 56 51-100
Alla Prima 57 51-100
Soigné 74 51-100
Jungsik 87 51-100
Kwonsooksoo 98 51-100

The overlap between the two lists is small, which is the point: Mingles and Mosu appear on both, while most starred Seoul restaurants never enter the peer vote at all. Two further 2026 individual awards are worth knowing because they predict where booking pressure lands next: San took the One To Watch Award, the first Seoul restaurant to win it since 2017, and Cho Eun-hee of Onjium was named Asia's Best Female Chef 2026.

What a meal in Seoul actually costs in 2026

Korea has an official answer to this. The Korea Consumer Agency publishes monthly average prices for eight eat-out staples by region through its Chamgagyeok price survey, which is why the figures below carry a reading month rather than a vague range. They move every month.

Item Seoul average (KRW) Reading
Gimbap, one roll 3,800 Aug 2026
Kimchi-jjigae set meal 8,654 May 2026
Naengmyeon 12,615 Apr 2026
Samgyetang 18,154 May 2026
Bib Gourmand meal ceiling 45,000 MICHELIN 2026

The table shows how steep the gradient is inside ordinary Korean food. Two bowls of samgyetang cost 36,308 won, more than a full day of eating at the other averages. Naengmyeon rose 4.13% year on year to just under 13,000 won, and gimbap 4.89%, so the mental price list a returning visitor carries from a 2023 trip is now wrong by a meaningful margin. Reporting on the same survey cycle gives the kimchi-jjigae figure as both 8,577 and 8,654 won depending on the reading; either way it sits under 9,000 won. Numbeo, which is crowdsourced rather than official, put an inexpensive Seoul restaurant meal at 13,000 won in its 22 July 2026 update, close enough to the naengmyeon average to be a fair rule of thumb.

Worked example: five days of eating, one splurge

Take a single traveller, five days, using the official averages above.

Breakfast is a gimbap roll at 3,800 won. Lunch is a kimchi-jjigae set at 8,654 won. Dinner is naengmyeon at 12,615 won. That is 25,069 won a day, or 125,345 won across five days.

Now swap one of those dinners for a Bib Gourmand meal at the full 45,000 won ceiling. Remove 12,615, add 45,000, and the five-day total becomes 157,730 won per person, roughly US$112 at the 1,407 won to the dollar rate quoted on 7 August 2026.

The decision rule follows from that arithmetic. If your food budget for the trip is under about 200,000 won per person, put all of it into Bib Gourmand meals and markets, because one Bib Gourmand dinner costs about 3.6 times a standard eating day and still leaves the budget intact. Starred tasting menus are a separate line item, priced by each restaurant on its own page, and a single one will absorb the whole five-day figure above. Book one because you want that specific kitchen, not because it appeared in a ranking.

Where this fails: the numbers assume normal trading days. During Chuseok, which falls on 24 to 26 September in 2026, family-run stalls and small independent restaurants close, and the cheap end of this budget disappears for several days while hotel and chain dining stays open at full price.

Markets do more work than restaurant lists on a first trip

Gwangjang Market is the one crowd recommendation that survives scrutiny, with a caveat about hours. Per the Seoul city tourism office listing for Gwangjang Market, the main market trades 09:00 to 18:00 and closes Sundays, while the Food Alley runs 09:00 to 23:00 year-round. The address is 88 Changgyeonggung-ro, Jongno-gu; the practical entrances are Jongno 5-ga Exit 8 on Line 1 or Euljiro 4-ga Exit 4 on Lines 2 and 5. The dishes the official guide names are bindae-tteok, modum-jeon, mayak gimbap, sundae, yukhoe, tteokbokki and eomuk. Bindaetteok ran at about 5,000 won a piece in early 2026.

Arriving on a Sunday afternoon expecting the full market is the single most common Gwangjang mistake, and the reason so many trip reports describe it as smaller than expected.

Tongin Market in Seochon runs a different format that rarely reaches English threads. Its Dosirak Cafe sells about ten brass yeopjeon coins plus an empty six-section lunchbox for 5,000 won, and participating stalls charge one to three coins per side dish, so you assemble a tray across the whole market. Coins are sold at the customer service point in the middle of the market. For a solo traveller this solves the portion-minimum problem that makes grilled-meat restaurants awkward to eat at alone.

If you are building a day around either market, our guide to what to book first in Seoul and what closes when covers the closing-day traps at the palaces nearby.

Choosing by what you want to eat, not by rank

This table maps the four situations people are actually describing when they ask for the best Korean restaurants in Seoul.

What you want Where it lives Reserve ahead
Grilled meat, group of 3-4 Neighbourhood galbi and samgyeopsal houses Optional
A single memorable dinner Bib Gourmand, under 45,000 won Yes
Tasting-menu Korean fine dining Starred restaurants and Asia's 50 Best entries Yes
Cheap, varied, solo Gwangjang Food Alley, Tongin dosirak No

Barbecue deserves its own treatment because the variable is the cut and the grill, not the ranking; we break that down in the guide to picking Korean BBQ in Seoul by cut, char and budget. Where you sleep also decides how much of this you can reach after 22:00, which is covered in our comparison of the best areas to stay in Seoul for first-time visitors.

Four things that cost people a meal

Prices that are not posted. At market stalls without a price board, ask before ordering rather than after. Posted prices are the norm at Gwangjang's established stalls, and the absence of one is the signal.

Sunday and holiday closures. Beyond Gwangjang's main hall, independent restaurants take irregular rest days, and the 2026 calendar has 18 public holiday days including Seollal on 16 to 18 February and Chuseok on 24 to 26 September.

Booking windows, not price, are the constraint at the top. Starred kitchens run limited seatings, often two services a day. The seat is the scarce resource, and reservations open on a fixed schedule set by each restaurant.

Stale recommendations. Before acting on any thread more than a year old, confirm the restaurant still exists at that address. This is the one check worth doing on every name you collect, and it takes under a minute per restaurant.

FAQ

How many MICHELIN-starred restaurants are there in Seoul?

42 stars across Seoul in the 2026 edition: one Three-Star, ten Two-Star and 31 One-Star restaurants. Nationwide the total is 46 starred restaurants, the difference being Busan's four One-Stars.

What does a Bib Gourmand meal cost in Seoul?

Under 45,000 won per person for a complete meal, which is the threshold MICHELIN itself applies when awarding the designation. Seoul has 51 Bib Gourmand restaurants in the 2026 selection.

Is Gwangjang Market open on Sunday?

The Food Alley is, running 09:00 to 23:00 year-round. The main market section closes on Sundays, as does the Guie vintage shopping street, so a Sunday visit gets you the food and little else.

Which Seoul restaurant ranks highest in Asia?

Mingles, at No.4 on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2026 and the only Three-Star restaurant in Korea. Onjium follows at No.14, and its chef Cho Eun-hee was named Asia's Best Female Chef 2026.

Is Reddit a good source for Seoul restaurant recommendations?

For operating detail, queues, portion minimums and dish selection, yes. For rankings and for anything opened or closed in the last two years, no, because vote scores do not decay and archived threads are never corrected.

Prices and award listings here carry the date they were read and will move. This is general travel information, not a booking service or a personalised recommendation.
